How does weight change with age?

How can you tell if your bodyweight has changed?

A person who has less body fat than their muscle mass will experience weight loss. This means that daily calories should be less than daily energy. Low activity levels are the most common cause for weight loss. Others include pregnancy, hormonal imbalances or certain medications. When there is more fat than muscles, it's called weight gain. It happens when people eat more calories than they use during a given day. Common reasons include overeating, increased physical activity, and hormonal changes.

The main reason why our bodies lose weight is because we consume fewer calories than we burn. When we exercise regularly, we increase our metabolism rate which burns off more calories throughout the day. This does not necessarily mean that we will get thinner. What is more important is whether or not our body is losing or gaining weight. If we're burning more calories than we're consuming then we're going to lose weight. But if you consume more calories than you burn, you're actually storing them for fat.

As we age, we become less agile and don't move as often. We also tend to eat less food than we did when we were younger. Also, we are more likely to gain weight. On the other hand, we have more muscle mass and look larger than we actually are.

If you don't weigh yourself every week, it's impossible to determine how much weight has been lost. There are many options for measuring your weight. You can also measure your waist, hips or thighs. Some people prefer using bathroom scales and others prefer tape measure.

To track your progress, weigh yourself once a week. Measure your waistline once per month. You can also take photographs of yourself every few years to track how far your progress has been.

You can also check your height online to find out how many pounds you have. If you are 5'10" tall, and you weigh 180 lbs, then you would probably weigh 180 lbs.

What does the "vitamins” word mean?

Vitamins can be described as organic compounds found in food. Vitamins are necessary for us to absorb nutrients in the foods we consume. Vitamins are not made by the body, so they must be obtained through food.

There are two types of vitamins: water soluble and fat soluble. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water easily. Examples include vitamin C,B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, biotin, pantothenic acid, and choline. The liver and fatty tissues are home to fat-soluble vitamins. Examples include vitamin D, E, K, A, and beta carotene.

Vitamins are classified based on their biological activity. There are eight major groups of vitamins:

  • A – Essential for normal growth, and the maintenance of good health.
  • C - vital for proper nerve function, and energy production.
  • D - Vital for healthy bones and teeth
  • E is required for good vision and reproduction.
  • K - essential for healthy muscles, nerves, and bones.
  • P - Vital for strong bones and teeth.
  • Q - aids digestion and absorption of iron.
  • R is required for the production of red blood cells.

The recommended daily allowance of vitamins (RDA), varies according to age, gender, physical condition, and other factors. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has established the RDA values.

For adults aged 19 and older, the RDA for vitamin B is 400 micrograms daily. Pregnant women require 600 micrograms daily to support fetal development. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Infants below one year old require 700mg per day. But, between 9 months to 12 months, the amount drops to 500mg per day.

Children aged between 1-18 years require 800 micrograms of sugar per day, while overweight children need 1000 micrograms. Children who are underweight receive 1200 micrograms every day to meet their nutritional requirements.

Children 4-8 years old who have anemia must consume 2200 micrograms of Vitamin C daily.

2000 micrograms are required daily for good health in adults over 50. Because of their higher nutrient needs, women who are pregnant or nursing need 3000 mg per day.

Adults over 70 require 1500 micrograms each day, since they lose around 10% of their muscle mass every decade.

Women who are pregnant and lactating need more nutrients than the RDA. Pregnant woman need 4000 micrograms daily in pregnancy, and 2500 per day after childbirth. Breastfeeding mothers need 5000 micrograms per day when breast milk is being produced.
