It's good to know that low-fat diets have many health benefits. Here are some benefits: Lower risk of coronary disease, lower risks of certain kinds of cancer, and a higher TG level. However, not all low-fat diets exclude non-lean dairy products and meats. There are some exceptions. Nuts and seeds are one of these exceptions. In small amounts, nuts and seeds can be tolerated.

Researchers who tried to assess the impact of low fat diets upon cancer have been disappointed. They are unanimous in their belief that weight management and healthy eating habits are crucial, but have not been able to prove that low-fat diets can reduce certain cancers. Women failed to meet the minimum daily requirement of 20g of fat. This meant that cream cheese and butter were not allowed on bagels or breads, and that oil was limited in salad dressings.

Lower risk of cancer

Recent research suggests that women who eat low in fat may be at a lower risk of developing breast cancer. The study, which involved nearly 50,000 women, found that a low-fat diet is associated with a 21 percent lower risk of the disease for women with additional risk factors. These risk factors include high cholesterol, diabetes, high bloodpressure, and elevated cholesterol. Researchers point out that this intervention study is the first to examine this type.


Increased TG levels

A British Journal of Nutrition published a study that found that TG levels could be increased by eating very little fat. Although the magnitude of this response can vary between people, it can be as high as 70% higher than the initial concentration. This result may be related to differences in metabolism of CMs in the small intestine. It is important to study the relationship in greater detail to better understand this mechanism.

HDL C levels decreased

Scientists found that low-fat diets resulted in lower HDL levels. They also responded differently to apoAI-I. The authors concluded that the effect of low-fat diets on HDL-C was related to their subjects' dietary composition, which included protein, phospholipids, and HDL-C.
